Sunshine on a rainy day

So a rainy day found us heading off for a free tour of the Hermanus space agency

They only look at the relationship of the sun on the earth and the space between. They had real time screen showing activity on the sun which we saw updating whilst we were there. They explained about magnetic storms which cause the aurora borealis.
They work on magnetism and compasses and here are some of the compasses they use and/or calibrate. The loopy thing on the left was designed and patented by them. It recreates earths magnetism (I think) and the compass is put in the middle and recalibrated.

The world map behind though recently donated still featured the USSR

There was a model of the degaussing technique where they demagnetise submarines so they do not get caught by magnetic mines

We also had a look at the room they often use to demonstrate the reality of magnetics when they are teaching the local school kids

They do it with mirrors

Still windy outside

Beautiful clouds though

We went to see the effect of the storm on the waves

Still windy

Whoosh and sploosh

But showing absolutely no commitment to bad weather we also saw blue skies and rainbows

Looking round to the new harbour in the distance

So we went to see them close up

Incredible waves

The waves were even going over the new harbour wall

We didn't get out the car for this bit!

Further along the coast the waves were less dramatic but still high

Some fab sights this week from the sun and back!
More later xxx
